| Robyn’s
Side of the Story
Friendship.
That’s what brought John and I
together.
One night, I was hanging out with a friend
from college. I'd decided to try out a new hair-style, and she was
putting braids in my hair.
She’d gotten in touch with two
high school acquaintances, and they’d made plans to get together
that night for dinner to catch up on old times. Since I was around,
she asked me to join them.
I met John and his best friend Duan at
the same time. His friend was very boisterous and was immediately
"on." He was a funny guy, but I knew he wasn't quite "my
type." My attention went to the second guy, who turned out
to be John.
First Impression:
I liked John right away. He was a cute but quiet guy, which was
attractive to me.
The dinner discussion moved to e-mail
jokes, and I coyly asked to be added to his e-mail list. I’m
not the type to make the first move, but offering him my e-mail
address seemed like a safe place to start.
We began corresponding by e-mail. Just
when I was about to give up hope that we'd ever get together, he
invited me to go out in person.
We went out for a couple of dinners,
for a couple of movies, for a couple of basketball games, and out
to a couple of clubs, but all of these outings were platonic.
John and I were friendly, but our relationship
never got off the ground. Eventually, we fell back into e-mail mode
and the correspondences became less frequent.
Nearly four years later, I received an
e-mail from John out of the blue. It was a very sweet message that
expressed his regret that he’d never made a move on me.
I was genuinely happy to hear from him.
I wrote back to him, letting him know that I was no longer in a
relationship.
We made plans to see each other for
our first official date.

John’s Side of the Story
At the time, I was working 12 hour
shifts. It was the first of four straight 12 hour days. All day,
my best friend, Duan, and I were trying to make arrangements to
meet up with a friend of ours from high school. Since I was busy
working, I left all the planning up to her and Duan.
Well, later, Duan called me at work
and said, “They want to go to dinner and see a movie afterwards”.
I responded, “They, who are they?”. I was already
getting annoyed, knowing that I had to get up at 6 AM the next
morning and wasn’t in the mood for a long night. I was a
shy guy at the time, so I dreaded the thought of having to socialize
with a NEW person after working all day.
Then when I found out that I was driving,
and we were going to Virginia for dinner. I started getting irritated.
I was already so tired and was hoping we’d all meet somewhere
near where I worked. I remember joking to Duan, “Her friend
better look good”.
First
Impression: Robyn looked good. She was a petite, little
cutie with a soft, sweet voice. I told Duan as much. She was shy,
which for a shy guy like me, can be very frustrating.
Later that night, Duan had asked everyone
in the car about there dating status. I ran a red light trying
to hear Robyn’s answer. Never did hear it . Ruined the whole
movie for me trying to decide what she had said. “Should
I flirt with her or not?”, was all I could think about.
Well, after finding out that she DIDN’T
have a boyfriend, I e-mailed her the next day, jokingly asking
her if she had my doggie-bag from the Steakhouse. I’d misplaced
it. She e-mailed me back saying something like, “Yes, and
it was good. Mmmm.” I was tickled by her sense of humor.
We started hanging out a bit, but being
the smooth operator that I was NOT, things never escalated to
actual dating. We corresponded through e-mail and online chat
over the years after that. I even bought some tickets from her
to a Janet Jackson concert, where I saw her there with her boyfriend
at the time.
Four years later, I’d had a dream
about Robyn. Seriously, I woke up thinking about her. I don’t
remember the actual dream, but it was like 2 AM, and I had decided
to write her and talk about our past times, express my regrets
on never having made a move on her, and to find out if she was
dating anyone at the time.
